What are the types of dissociative disorders?

There are several types of dissociative disorders, including dissociative amnesia, dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder), depersonalization/derealization disorder, and other specified dissociative disorder. Dissociative amnesia involves memory loss that is more extensive than normal forgetfulness and is usually triggered by a traumatic event. Dissociative identity disorder is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personalities within the same individual. Depersonalization/derealization disorder involves feelings of detachment from oneself or the environment. Other specified dissociative disorder includes cases that do not fit neatly into the other categories. Treatment for these disorders often involves therapy to help individuals process and integrate traumatic experiences.
